LES PASSAGES: DANCE AS A STABILIZING FORCE

A cast consisting of young people aged 14 to 27 who took part in a 12-week rehearsal process with Sylvain Émard led to a collective, participatory dance called Les Passages. Living with stabilized mental health problems, they experienced the transformative power of dance and the pride of presenting their 10-minute piece to audiences on December 21. The two free performances at the atrium of the hospital CHU Sainte-Justine rounded off the dance company’s second collaboration with Espace Transition.

Testimonials from the audience underlined the highly moving nature of the performance, and the vibrant energy underscoring this act of surpassing oneself. « It was a great pleasure to work with them and see them progress. It was a huge challenge, and we can safely say that they came through with flying colours, » said Sylvain Émard. Warmest congratulations to the dancers Caitie, Maryna, Mia, Mike, Nawal and Sophie and many thanks for their boundless passion.

Sylvain Émard Danse wishes to thank Circuit-Est centre chorégraphique for welcoming Les Passages in its studio.

ABRIDGED VERSION OF RHAPSODIE FOR EDCM STUDENTS

Keen to contribute to training the next generation of dancers, the choreographer is currently working with the young performers, emphasizing the strength of an ensemble and the dynamic combination of mastery and abandonment. The result of their work will be presented in a double program running from May 15 to 18 at Tangente

CHOIR – OFFICIAL SELECTION AT PARCOURS DANSE

Now that the final creative development phase for Choir has just been completed, this immersive installation is part of the official selection at Parcours Danse. More specifically, a conference-demonstration of the work will be presented during this dance platform.

Propelled by a superimposed sound environment, 12 performers inhabit Choir body and soul. In a 360-degree projection, the large ensemble brings the installation to life. Imagined by Sylvain Émard and co-created with the multidisciplinary creative studio mirari, Choir pulls the audience into the essence of dance, right into its very heart in up-close proximity to an electrifying cast.

During Parcours Danse, Sylvain Émard and Thomas Payette, creative director at mirari, will present an overview of this new work featuring a selection of exclusive images.

LES PASSAGES, A COLLECTIVE CREATION BY AND FOR YOUNG PARTICIPANTS

In spring 2022, Sylvain Émard Danse restaged a concentrated version of Le Grand Continental for a group of fifteen young amateur dancers as part of ON danse Le Petit Continental!, a project presented in association with Circuit-Est centre chorégraphique and Espace Transition. Affiliated to the pediatric hospital CHU Sainte-Justine, Espace Transition is a social rehabilitation initiative that offers creative workshops for young people with stabilized mental health problems.

On the strength of this first enriching experience, the company decided to continue its collaboration with Espace Transition in a brand-new work, Les Passages. Since September, 12 participants aged 14 to 27 have been working in a studio to create an original 10-minute choreography directed by Sylvain Émard. A period of 12 rehearsals will culminate on December 21 with the presentation of two performances.

The cast of Prelude #1 – The Circle captivated Rivière-du-Loup during celebrations marking the city’s 350th anniversary. As the forecast was for rain, the vast circle of dancers performed in the gymnasium in the sports centre of Cégep de Rivière-du-Loup. For the occasion, the space was transformed into a real cultural stage for the duration of the performance, thanks to the initiative and know-how of the RDL en spectacles’ team.

The first part of the in-situ diptych Preludes, Prelude #1 The Circle originally featured 20 dancers. This edition was adapted for a cast of 12 strong performers, who very aptly conveyed the enchanting rhythms, energy and entrancing movement of the piece.

Preludes were made possible thanks to support from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.

RECORD CROWDS FOR LE PETIT CONTINENTAL!

Présentation du Petit Continental à Notre-Dame-de-Grâce le 6 juillet 2023

© David Wong

Some 50 amateur dancers greatly impressed audiences in the Saint-Léonard and Notre-Dame-de-Grâce neighbourhoods in June and July with Le Petit Continental, a condensed version of the Le Grand Continental. At the end of the 8 rehearsals for each set of two performances, the stars for a day performed two 10-minute presentations of this dynamic contemporary line dance show. Close to 800 spectators vigorously applauded this summer special, their very own Petit Continental.

That unique, profoundly human experience was a memorable moment for members of the Montreal community, a grace note of dance and artistic creation.

Launched in 2019, Le Petit Continental took city parks and public spaces by storm in five Montreal boroughs, featuring a total of 200 amateur dancers.

Le Petit Continental received funding as part of Montreal’s cultural development agreement reached by the City of Montreal and the Government of Quebec. The company wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to its presenting partners: Culture et bibliothèque de l’Arrondissement de Saint-Léonard, Maison de la culture Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Arrondissement de Côtes-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.

WORLD PREMIÈRE OF RHAPSODIE AT DANSE DANSE

Rhapsodie, a work inspired by the rituals inherent to dance, will finally be unveiled to the public. Next week, more than one year after its originally scheduled world première, the 20 dancing bodies of Rhapsodie will be back on the boards of the Studio-Théâtre in the Wilder Building at the invitation of Danse Danse, co-producer of the piece, a work that the choreographer has been dreaming of for years. Indeed, Sylvain Émard cultivates a fascination for dance halls and the instinctive, visceral side of those who abandon themselves to the pleasure of dance.

All shows are sold out. You can, however, also view the show from the comfort of your own home.

Le Grand Continental in the 3.0 Era

Following the success last spring of Le Grand Continental – Living room style, a new version was launched on April 6 Le Grand Continental 3.0. Hundreds of dancers enjoyed a virtual face-to-face with the choreographer live on Facebook to learn the steps to the latest iteration of the most contemporary line dance. They all performed together, separately, on April 17 at 12 noon.

PRÉLUDE #1– LE CERCLE at International Festival of Films on Art

Created in autumn 2020, the diptych Preludes had not yet been presented to an audience, due to the constraints of the public health and safety measures in force. Thanks however to the 39th Festival of Films on Art in co-presentation with the Festival TransAmériques, Prélude #1 – Le Cercle, directed by Sandrick Mathurin, was screened virtually last March.

The original impetus was Rhapsodie, a piece for 20 dancers that was to have been presented last November at Danse Danse. Inspired by the ritual aspect of dance, Rhapsodie celebrates the visceral, instinctive nature of humans, capturing the life force and the sometimes subversive abandon of bodies in movement. With the project interrupted by the pandemic, the choreographer concocted these Preludes for his piece, now temporarily brought to a halt. This two-part prologue toys with the current constraints we face as it explores the very essence of Rhapsodie. The creation of Preludes was made possible thanks to special support from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec.
